SPYROS GERAVELIS LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Even a small pond with a waterfall can have a profound impact on the garden experience. It creates a powerful ambient soundscape. Keep a pond, no matter how small, alive with plants and small fish, creating a tiny ecosystem that will attract birds, insects, and even small mammals, boosting the garden’s biodiversity. If even that is not possible, a small basin with flowing water will suffice.
In psychoanalysis, water is considered a primary symbol of the unconscious. Jung described it as a reservoir of repressed experiences, emotions, collective memories, and untapped potential. Water bodies symbolize the vastness and depth of the subconscious, suggesting that while we may see the surface (our conscious self), the deeper layers remain hidden and complex.
Water is associated with intuition and dreams, acting as a gateway to deeper feelings and unresolved issues. Dreams featuring water encourage individuals to explore their subconscious emotions, memories, and desires.
In Zen practice, water symbolizes the fluid and ever-changing nature of reality. Just as water flows and adapts to its environment, Zen teachings emphasize the importance of accepting change and uncertainty in life. Ponds are also seen as mirrors that reflect the self. The calmness of a pond invites introspection and reflection.
A small pond can have a large impact.
