An innovative space that serves as a meeting point, a place of creativity, and a center for environmental awareness. This space integrates activities that promote community, tradition, and biodiversity, while fostering the development of a healthy relationship with nature, with each other and with the self.

1. Community Vegetable Garden

A community vegetable garden has been established, where residents have the opportunity to grow fresh vegetables and aromatic herbs. The garden also functions as a place of education, experiential learning, and social cohesion. At the same time, it promotes healthy eating habits and raises awareness of the value of local production.
Only heirloom varieties are cultivated, using natural methods, without chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

2. Heirloom Seed Production

A group of volunteers has already begun producing and collecting heirloom seeds with the aim of preserving and disseminating them. In this way, agricultural heritage is safeguarded and citizens’ connection to local and traditional cultivation is strengthened.
The volunteer team also produces seedlings of heirloom varieties, which are distributed to garden participants. In addition, they offer educational workshops, as well as ongoing guidance and support.

3. Production of Native Plants for Urban Planting

Through collaboration with volunteer groups, native plants of Rhodes are cultivated for use in public parks across the city. This initiative contributes to a deeper understanding of the island’s natural environment, enhances the urban landscape, supports the creation of sustainable green spaces, and increases urban biodiversity—while adding aesthetic and environmental value to everyday life.

4. Creation of a Native Plant Garden

A small garden made up entirely of native plants is currently being developed. It will serve as a model for their use in urban green spaces, as well as a site for research and experimentation. At the same time, it will act as a source of propagation material (seeds and cuttings) and provide educational value, giving visitors the opportunity to become familiar with the local natural environment.
The garden is being created by students of the 4th High School, who have adopted it and will be responsible for its care and maintenance.

5. Cultivation of Dye Plants

Plants used for the production of natural dyes—for textiles and other applications—are cultivated in the space.

6. Research and Cultivation of Edible Native Plants

Edible native plants are grown and studied. These plants were once a fundamental food source for people—a form of knowledge that is gradually being lost, while many of these species have become increasingly rare.

7. Research and Cultivation of Medicinal Native Plants

Native medicinal plants are also cultivated and researched within the space.

All of these activities are carried out by volunteer groups.

The new space aspires to become a model of participatory and environmentally responsible action, strengthening the connection between people, nature, tradition, and community.

It hosts educational workshops and welcomes frequent visits from schools. Recently, it hosted a wide range of activitiesas the base of  the 1st Rhodes Eco Festival, including heirloom seed exchanges, natural cultivation workshops for garden participants and schools, concerts, pétanque games, and more.

A rich program of future activities related to nature and culture is planned, with the aim of making the Society’s Garden a vibrant space for connecting with nature, gathering, mutual support, and creative expression.
