Spyros Geravelis

Born in Athens Greece, Spyros  graduated from Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki, with a Master’s Degree in Agriculture, Agriculture Operations, and Related Sciences.  Spyros has always had a passion about art and nature, and found a way to combine these passions in Landscape design. He lives in Rhodes Island in Greece for the last 35 years and works as a Landscape designer, contractor and consultant, and is currently the Manager of the Environmental Planning and Urban Green Department for the Municipality of Rhodes.

He has designed and constructed many projects for residential gardens, large and small, hotels, parks and public spaces, as well as restoration of historical spaces, in Rhodes, Crete, Athens and the Dodecanese islands. He has collaborated with architecture and landscape architecture companies in Rhodes, Athens and Brussels.

His landscapes are inspired by the Mediterranean landscape and many are influenced by the Japanese art of garden making, mainly not in form, but mostly in the spirit they convey.  He approaches the garden with reverence to nature and natural elements,   and respect to the environment.  His landscapes are simple, water efficient and focused in low maintenance, designed to work together with nature rather than trying to dominate it.  Colours and shapes are subtle and reflect the natural background landscape of Mediterranean forest, rocky garrigue, and of course the sea and beach, which, when possible, is “borrowed” by the garden as a view, or incorporated with the garden. An art lover, he considers landscaping a work of art, and also incorporates art to some of his designs, creating small “land art” type projects in public spaces.

“Spyros understood with great sensitivity the balance between garden , architecture and landscape. He has very much helped us to frame the beautiful  view and to make a simple, natural garden with very little maintenance, minimum watering, nice perfumes, continuing without a break what we mostly love in Greek islands: vegetation and sea, shades of green and shades of blue.”

"Spyros designed 8,000sqm of landscaped gardens for our property in Greece, submitting very high quality drawings, then he sourced around 2,500 plants/trees/shrubs for the garden, along with several kilometres of irrigation pipes,15 tons of pebbles and his team spent a gruelling 10 days planting it all in 2 separate visits. A huge project!

Spyros’ professionalism, and his attention to detail was exceptional, and as a non-Greek speaker, he was able to totally bridge the gap and coordinate all onsite contractors, equipment and workmen. We were demanding clients and and were not onsite during the installation, however Spyros completely rose to the challenge of what was a difficult project, his communication and organisation were fantastic and we’re thrilled with the results!

In particular he is adept at choosing Greek native plants, and has a great appreciation of how to work with the topography of a site and it’s local microclimate. It always shows when a landscape designer is passionate, and with Spyros that comes through very strongly, he is obviously very passionate about plants and nature, and it shows in his high quality work."
